Against the Grain (THIRDS #5) [Cael & Ash] by Charlie Cochet

I LOVED this one SO MUCH. Really enjoyed getting Cael and Ash's love story. It was different in pace than Dex and Sloane's relationship because they both already loved and wanted each other, it was just waiting for Ash to accept the fact he is gay, he loves Cael and is willing to put his past aside so he could be with him. I think it was mostly about getting "hit on the head" figuratively speaking so he could make the final step towards Cael.

When I've heard this is Cael and Ash's book I thought it would somehow be more about THEM, but actually it was very similar to the other books in the series, Dex and Sloane have a huge part in it as well, not only because Ash and Sloane are best friends and Dex and Cael are brothers.. The book is mostly told from their POVs with a little bit of Austen thrown in the mix. He's starting to have a bigger role in the series which I really like! He's such an interesting character!

The book continues to explore Sloane's losing control of his feral side as well as trying to find out who's behind the facility being open to business, the Therian mind controlling drug - this time they do it together as a team. They found out A LOT, things they didn't even consider including another organization - TIN -Therian Intelligence Network - we (and them..) knew nothing about. Basically it's like the CIA, only in the Therian version. I was really curious about what "TIN" means when I learned after 10 books we'll have a new spin-off series by that name so now I know what it is and what's the general idea behind it is! SO COOL!

The book begins just where the previous one stopped with Sloane and Ash being confronted by Tony due to their involvement with his sons. Yeah he figured it out but he had things to say about it. He mostly wanted to talk to Ash, he could see something is on the verge of happening between Ash and Cael and he wanted to let Ash know there is much he doesn't know about Cael, mostly things considering his ex from years ago - Don Fuller - who left his literally broken.

We actually get to meet Fuller, it was heart breaking in ways I can't even say. Ash dealt with things beautifully but what I enjoyed the most about it was how Cael dealt with him himself showing him he is not who he used to be, with Ash having been a big influence in helping Cael out. It's like he was there and wasn't there. Cael dealt on his own, yet he wouldn't have been able to do that without Ash, what he taught him, what he meant for him, how he saw him.

We get A LOT of answers in the book, not just about the facility, the drugs and who was behind all this crazy, we also get an explanation to Hobbs difficulties which would probably be addressed properly in the next installment (centering on Hobbs and Calvin).

I really loved getting to see Cael and Ash finding their way to one another. It was very difficult on Cael, all the waiting.. but it was much more difficult for Ash. We hear a little bit more about his twin brother Arlo and about his parents. It was truly sad and heart breaking. Cael was perfect in these instances just as Ash was for him when Fuller showed up. It was actually these things that made Ash realize that the only way forward is to be with Cael because he can't see himself any other way as it is.

So another AMAZING installment in the series is done and over with, I'll be happily continuing to the next (and next and next) one.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

THIRDS is my absolute favorite Paranormal MM Romance / Urban Fantasy series. It's the first I've read by Charlie Cochet (and wasn't the last!). I absolutely ADORE the series, each book was simply superb! There's a lot of action in the books, but there is also A LOT of laugh out loud moments as well as heartfelt ones between the MCs. I couldn't have asked for more. This series has it all!

The world building is AWESOME, it's explained right in the beginning of the series - A biological weapon used in the Vietnam war caused a mutations that made the Therians, a new species of half man - half animal. What we usually call "shape shifters". The world is struggling to deal with this new species, a lot of prejudice, a need to register and somehow contain the new members of society. The THIRDS - Therian-Human Intelligence, Recon, Defense Squadron is formed to help the "human police" deal with Therian threats.

The series focuses on the "Destructive Delta" team, mostly the leader - Sloane a Jaguar Therian and his new human partner Dex (with 3 novels focus on other couples).

The Destructive Delta Team:
Sloane Brodie (Therian Jaguar) - Dexter "Dex" J. (Justice) Daley
Ash Keeler (Therian Lion) - Julietta "Letty" Guerrera
Cael Maddock (Therian Cheetah) - Rosa Santiago
Ethan Hobbs (Therian Tiger) - Calvin Summers

The series contains 10 novel but Dex and Sloane's journey continues on the spin-off - TIN (Therian Intelligence Network)

HIGHLY HIGHLY Recommended!

Each book contains a cast members list and a glossary, but if you want MORE - about the books, characters and the world of THIRDS - look into Charlie's dedicated site THIRDS HQ.
