Midnight Breed - Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian is one of my absolute favorite Paranormal Romance Series. Like many of the series in this genre, we have a group of vampire warriors who are in charge of defending their race.

The Order mainly protect the general population (vampire AND humans) from rouge vampires. Vampires whose crave for blood have reached a point of no return meaning they can no longer control themselves and since there is nothing to be done about this situation these rouges vampires have to be put down. Besides obvious risk to the human population, rouges rabid vampires also are a treat in the sense that vampires live in secret groups (called Darkhavens) there they can live their separate lives without probing human eyes. Naturally they are a part of the general population but the way they live, in a sort of community, helps them maintain their traditions and way of living.

In the recent years, the Order became infamous. There is no respect for the members of the Order and moreover they are treated like "barbarians", the vampire population doesn't believe that they are even needed but boy oh boy they are wrong.. dark days are ahead..

In the beginning, years and years ago, a group of highly strong vampires crushed on Earth. They are the base of the vampire population nowadays. As is seems there are no female vampires, only males. The females that can reproduce with vampires are called "breedmates" and they can be distinguished by a certain mark (crescent moon with a drop) that each breedmate has somewhere on her body. Each breedmate also has a special (inhuman) ability which she transfers to her vampire son. Thus every vampire has a special ability passed to him from his human mother. Breedmates need to drink blood in order to enhance their special ability and sometimes so they can control it and it won't take over her life.

Each book has it's separate story in which each warrior finds himself a breedmate. As you can guess, the Order isn't notorious for no reason.. most of the warriors are somehow "damaged", preferring to live a life in the Order rather than build a life of their own. Finding their Breedmate makes them deal with their past and free themselves from its bindings. Beside the personal plot line there is also a bigger plot line about the main villain progressing from the first book until the 10th. From the 11th book there is a very significant change following a progression in 20 years changing the whole setting of the series as well as introducing new characters to the series (but not forgetting the "old" ones).

The main issue I had with the series as I was starting to read it, was the fact that there is a lot of resemblance between this series, and the general setting (mainly The Order and it's members) to the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward.  Lucan is too much of a Wrath, Tegan REALLY sounds like Zsadist not to mention the name of their novels are quite similar - Lover Awakened vs Midnight Awakening and actually they are both the third in the series. But putting these facts aside this series progresses to something different entirely! It becomes "its own" and has a different vibe especially in the global plot line.
Especially since Lara made a HUGE change in the series making it as different as possible from the beginning of the series (as well as from the BDB).
If I had to decide between the two, I'll surely pick this one.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

Please notice that at the very end of this page there is a list to all books, the link to their review and date published.

In the Midnight Breed Series Companion you can find data on all the characters in the series by A-B order including not so important figures. I highly recommend buying the companion and going through it after finishing the 10 books so you can remind yourself of the characters. When I feel like I don't remember who a certain character is I just breeze through it and get the knowledge I need. One warning though! I accidentally found out who killed the main villain in the series when I was looking at the information on the one who kills him! So BEWARE of spoilers!!! This is excellent AFTER you finish all 10 books not before!!

Here I'll add information on the basic heroes in the books (vampire and his breedmate) in the chronological order of the books they feature in. I'll do my best to add to this file as the series continues (beyond book 11) but naturally it won't be as detailed as written by the author in the Midnight Breed Series Companion.

Contains Spoilers!!!
The summaries from the Midnight Breed Series Companion were written after the 10th book and contain spoilers til then.
From there on, I"ll be adding my own summary referring to what happened to the main characters in their past as well as in their book
(for spoiler free reviews go to individual book review - listed in the end of this page).
Proceed with caution!

No longer runs combat missions due to irreparable brain injury sustained during the rescue of his Breedmate, Savannah thirty-plus years before the timeline of Kiss of Midnight. Founder of the Order in mid-1300s in Eastern Europe with Tegan, Marek, and five other Gen One Breed warriors. Led the uprising against the Ancients during same period, following the killing of Lucan’s mother at his father’s hands. The war against the Ancients resulted in the slaying of all but one, who was secretly hidden for centuries by Dragos. After the Order eventually dissolved in Europe, Lucan later established a Boston headquarters in 1898 with Gideon in an effort to combat Rogues in that city. Lucan is considered one of the most formidable Breed males in existence. As a Gen One, particularly one who’s seen firsthand the devastating results of what Bloodlust can do to one of his kind, Lucan’s greatest fear is losing himself to blood addiction. It is a fear he hides behind his contempt toward Rogues, but deep inside he dreads turning into the monster his father was. Orphaned as an infant in Boston twenty-seven years before the Midnight Breed series opens. Gabrielle’s unwed teen mother was institutionalized, and later committed suicide, after claiming to have been attacked by a vampire. Gabrielle doesn’t know who her father is, was raised in foster care until being adopted by local (human) family, the Maxwells, when she was twelve. Gabrielle had a troubled youth. At twenty-eight, she was living on her own and had become a gifted art photographer whose images, unbeknownst to her, often featured Breed locations. The swaggering wise-ass of the group, Dante has adopted the last name of Malebranche for when he’s forced to mingle among humans. Malebranche (“evil claws”) is also what he calls his weapons of choice—a pair of curved, titanium blades that he uses in hand-to-hand combat against Rogues. Dante fights hard and plays hard, and despite his brashness, he is also fiercely loyal to those he cares about. His closest friend in the Order is Sterling Chase, although that friendship becomes strained and nearly broken when Chase begins displaying signs of Bloodlust and his actions start to jeopardize Order missions. Dante and Tess had intended to make Chase godfather to Xander Raphael, but they instead ask Gideon to take the honor. The relationship between Dante and Chase is on the mend again during the timeline of Darker After Midnight.

Her mother remarried quickly to a successful local businessman. Tess’s stepfather sexually assaulted her on her seventeenth birthday, during which time he suffered a heart attack. Tess’s mother berated her daughter instead of supporting her, commanding Tess to use her special ability to “fix” him. Tess halted the man’s death, then later takes it back after discovering he has also accosted young children. Tess flees home, staying with friends until she finished school and began a new life, eventually working as a veterinarian in her own practice. She always knew she was different, and thought moving far away from her past would keep her personal demons at bay. Late one Halloween night, however, she encountered a dark, dangerous stranger in her clinic—Dante, severely wounded in combat. When she tried to help him, he bit her in desperate need of her blood. A bond that began out of necessity soon became a deep and unbreakable love. One of the original members of the Order at its founding, Tegan has a reputation for being stone cold, merciless and detached, the loner of the group. Centuries ago in Europe, his Breedmate, Sorcha, was kidnapped by a powerful Breed enemy of the Order. Bled to the point of no return, Sorcha was sent back to Tegan a Minion of the Breed male who drained her (Marek). Tegan went mad with grief and rage, and would have been lost to Bloodlust if not for Lucan’s brutal, but necessary, intervention. More recently, their eighteen-year-old son, Camden, went Rogue after being exposed to a drug called Crimson and is since deceased, shot and killed by Sterling Chase when the Rogue might have lashed out at his mother. Never knew his father, a Rogue who raped Rio’s sixteen-year old mother and left her pregnant with a child she would fear and despise as a monster. Later, orphaned as a young boy after men from the village raided his mother’s cottage and killed her, Rio was found around the age of five and raised by an area Darkhaven. They taught him what he was and how to survive. They also gave the boy who was given no name by his mother, and who thought of himself as an abomination because of his “manos del diablo”—his lethal, devil’s hands—an elegant, meaningful name: Eleuterio de la Noche Atanacio. Despite his tragic past and a more recent betrayal by his first Breedmate (Eva) that left him terribly scarred and nearly destroyed him, Rio remains one of the most noble, honorable members of the Order. Thirty-two during the timeline of Midnight Rising, Dylan Alexander was born with a troubling gift for seeing the dead. Fearful of being taken advantage of or shunned for this ability, she’s long tried to hide it, to deny it. As an adult, Dylan went on to make a career for herself in journalism, until she let a personal bias cloud her reporting. Demoted to a tabloid rag, she stumbles across a blockbuster story while vacationing in the mountains of the Czech Republic. This story, exposing a mysterious crypt hidden in the caverns, brings her face-to-face with the existence of the Breed—and puts her in the middle of the Order’s war with a dangerous enemy bent on world domination. It also draws her to scarred, emotionally-closed off Rio, and into a passion for which neither of them was prepared. Dylan later learns that the man she thought to be her father (Bobby Alexander) was actually her stepfather, and her true father is a man her mother met in Mykonos by the name of Zael. Through Jenna Tucker-Darrow’s investigation, it is revealed that Zael is a likely Atlantean immortal. She actually gets to meet him and have a warm relationship later on in the series.

Niko custom crafts a lot of the Order’s specialty ammunition used for combat missions and killing Rogues. He is impatient and a little cocky, full of explosive energy, but far from reckless. She fought her abductors, and in the process unlocked her unique ability. Since that time, she was forced to serve as a bodyguard for her captor. It was in this capacity that she crossed paths with a member of the Order, Nikolai, who was on a mission in Montreal involving Renata’s employer. While serving her abductor, Renata also came into contact with another abductee, a young Breedmate girl named Mira, whom Renata took under her wing. Renata carries four custom-crafted daggers that each bear a quality that guides her life: courage, faith, honor, sacrifice. Reichen and Claire had been in love about fifty years before the timeline of Midnight Awakening, but the couple was betrayed (Wilhelm Roth) and they endured a long separation before reuniting in Ashes of Midnight. During his time apart from Claire, Reichen took a human lover, sex club owner Helene. The relationship ended in tragedy when, during the timeline of Veil of Midnight, Helene was turned Minion and led Enforcement Agents into the Darkhaven to slaughter all inside. Reichen comes upon the aftermath and has to kill his human lover in an act of mercy. He then burns his Darkhaven to the ground with a massive fireball, conjured by the power of his ESP ability. She also fell in love with a charming, if reckless, Breed male from Berlin, Andreas Reichen. But while Claire anticipated Andreas’s proposal to be his mate, instead he left her without a word. Spurned and heartbroken, Claire later capitulated to Roth after his Breedmate was killed and he offered to take her as his mate. When she went missing in the city at eighteen years old and was presumed dead, Brock blamed himself, a burden of guilt he carried even as he joined the Order. Good-natured with his comrades, but merciless with those who cross him, Brock felt unworthy of being loved or trusted with another person’s life, until he was tasked with protecting an injured human woman, Jenna, brought back from a mission in Alaska that left her transformed in ways none of the Breed could have ever imagined was possible.

The Order brought her from Alaska to their Boston compound to heal, aided by Brock’s calming effect on the human. Given no name at birth, like the rest of his lab-bred assassin brothers, this lethal Breed male answers to the name of the role he was created to fill: Hunter. After his rearing in Dragos’s labs, Hunter’s home base was a meager farmhouse in Vermont, where he lived in an unfurnished, bare-floored cellar, tended by a Minion handler assigned to him since birth. Like all others raised to be Dragos’s personal army of assassins, Hunter had been fitted from childhood with a black electronic collar that contained an ultraviolet light source. This UV collar, if tampered with or triggered remotely by Dragos, would detonate and kill him instantly. Hunter has a special affection for Mira, who, as a child, unwittingly prevented him from carrying out one of his assassination missions (Sergei Yakut) when he looked into the young seer’s gaze and saw the girl would one day spare his life. She made good on that vision later, during the timeline of Veil of Midnight, and because of her, Hunter joined the Order’s fight against Dragos. Corinne was abducted while under the watch of one of her family’s Darkhaven security detail (Brock) and was eventually presumed dead, a lie perpetuated by the actions of her Darkhaven father, Victor Bishop. After seventy-five years of imprisonment in Dragos’s breeding labs, Corinne is rescued by the Order, along with several other captured Breedmates. It is discovered that she and the others were part of genetic and reproductive experiments, where Corinne gave birth to a son thirteen years ago, a boy she named Nathan. They also saw Danika for the first time together, and both were mesmerized by the Nordic blond beauty. Malcolm tried to impress her, seduce her with his dark, cynical charm. But it was Con who won Danika’s hand in the end. Malcolm harbored no ill will for his friend’s lucky match, but he secretly loved Danika for a long time. Mal remained unmated until very recently, when a young Breedmate named Fiona stole his heart with her innocence and sweetness. Mal and Fiona mated and soon were expecting a child, but Fiona met with tragedy in Edinburgh while shopping on her own. A blood club supplying pimp grabbed her off the street, intending to hand her over to an area crime boss (Reiver). She fought back and was stabbed and killed. Malcolm raced to the city in daylight hours to find her, and suffered UV burns and a savage knife wound across his face when he confronted the pimp. Part of the Darkhaven elite, Chase comes from a well-connected, political family with deep ties to the Breed’s Enforcement Agency. Bound by the Chase family motto, “Duty first.” Like the rest of his family, he holds several degrees from Harvard University, and before joining the Order during the timeline of Kiss of Crimson, most of Chase’s combat training was academic. This, along with his rigid, by-the-book attitude prompted Dante to nickname him “Harvard” the first time the warrior met him, although the two later became as close as brothers. Chase’s uptight nature disguises an inner turmoil that has plagued him for many years. Those struggles have cost him family and friends, and have become dangerously more apparent in the time he’s been part of the Order. Chase’s fight to resist Bloodlust nearly costs him his friendship with Dante. Chase and Tavia are parents to fraternal twins, a son and daughter, Aric and Carys, born soon after the close of Darker After Midnight.

Highly intelligent and capable, Tavia works as an assistant to a rising star senator in Boston. On the personal side, Tavia’s greatest limitations are the “scars” she bears from the accident, and a rare medical condition that requires frequent treatments at a specialized private clinic. What Tavia doesn’t realize--until her life collides with that of Sterling Chase, embroiled in an ongoing conflict of the Order’s--is that everything she’s been raised to believe has been a lie. She is neither human nor pure Breedmate; she is something extraordinary. Tavia later learns the truth of her origins, including the fact that her aunt is actually a Minion tasked with supervising her upbringing and reporting to Dragos. Orphaned in Montreal and abducted at the age of eight by the same Breed elder for whom Renata worked (Sergei Yakut). Mira is a Breedmate girl with a precognitive gift for showing someone an event fated to take place in their future. Her ability comes with a price, however: each vision she gives takes away some of her eyesight. To combat this problem, she wore a veil over her eyes during the timeline of Veil of Midnight. After becoming a resident of the Order’s compound in Boston, Mira was given custom-crafted purple contacts, created by Gideon, to protect her eyes and mute her seer’s gift to others who might look into her gaze. Mira was nicknamed “Mouse” by Renata, who’s become a surrogate mother to the girl. During the timeline of Veil of Midnight, several people saw visions in Mira’s eyes: Nikolai, Hunter, Sergei Yakut, Edgar Fabien, and Dragos. During the timeline of Ashes of Midnight, Mira accidently showed Claire a vision of Andreas’s death by flames and smoke. During events in Darker After Midnight, Mira inadvertently shows Lucan a vision of war and bloodshed that soon comes to pass. Mira’s closest friends, aside from Renata and Nikolai, are Kellan Archer and Nathan. She has a special connection to Hunter as well, who is fiercely protective of her. Mira is also immensely fond of the Order’s resident canines, Harvard and Luna. Although Mira is a child through the timeline of Darker After Midnight, her full romantic story is told twenty years afterward in Edge of Dawn.

Kellan is fourteen years old during the timeline of Taken by Midnight, where he is first introduced in the series as the Darkhaven teen of a prominent Boston family who’s abducted and held for ransom by Dragos’s men. Kellan’s abduction was actually a ruse meant to give Dragos the chance to find the location of the Order’s Boston compound, a goal achieved when the Order rescues the teen and brings him and his grandfather, Lazaro, into Order protection at their headquarters. It is soon discovered that Dragos embedded a GPS device in Kellan’s stomach, which the boy vomits up, alerting the Order that their longtime secret compound has been compromised. Kellan Archer is a sullen boy, bereft over the loss of his parents and all but one of his family members (Lazaro Archer) in a Darkhaven explosion carried out at Dragos’s command. Mira befriends Kellan immediately, deciding he will be her best friend whether he likes it or not (he doesn’t). During his recuperation with the Order, Kellan continues to withdraw, refusing to feed until Lucan takes him out to hunt in Darker After Midnight. He wants to join the Order for revenge on Dragos, but Lucan denies him, telling him he’s too young and wants it for the wrong reason. Later on in Darker After Midnight, Kellan takes part in a snowball fight with Nathan. When Mira gets hit with one of Nathan’s volleys, Kellan reacts with swift, protective fury. The two teen vampires grapple, and Kellan, sensing Nathan’s lethal skill and training, asks him to teach him everything he knows. Although Kellan is only a teenager as of the timeline of Darker After Midnight, his full romantic story is told twenty years afterward in Edge of Dawn.

Genetically, Nathan is the half-brother of his mother’s mate, Hunter, and is also related to Tavia Fairchild and the other, undiscovered Gen One females birthed in Dragos’s labs, who are each the product of DNA blending between the Ancient and unknown Breedmates. Has dermaglyphs from his head to his feet. Even as a boy, was expertly lethal because of his upbringing and training. During the timeline of Deeper Than Midnight (Midnight Breed #9), when Corinne and Hunter find Nathan in his Minion handler’s keeping in Georgia and find a way to free him of his UV collar, Nathan at first runs away. Lazaro and his kin have lived in the New England area for a century or so. Lazaro blames himself for the violence visited on his family by Dragos: the abduction of his nephew, Kellan; the slaying of Lazaro’s son, Christophe; and the destruction of the Archer Darkhaven by Dragos, which killed Lazaro’s long-time Breedmate, Eleanor, and the rest of their kin living in the Boston residence. Lazaro begins working closely with the Order afterward, offering up one of his unused Darkhaven retreats in Maine as temporary headquarters after the Boston compound is compromised to Dragos and the humans. Lazaro also shares with Lucan some history about the Ancients, that Lazaro’s sire attended secret gatherings with the other Ancients and taught Lazaro some of their language.
At the present he lives in Rome and works for the Order as a sort of ambassador but also as a warrior trying to find and eliminate - Opus Nostrum. In his short novella he not only finds his mate but he also has a near death experience concerning Opus Nostrum but since this is an outside novella there is no new evidence that can lead to further their cause.

Now, at 28 years old, they meet again when she accompanies her father to a secret meeting concerning the outing of the vampires to the human world.
