December 2015 Recap

Well, I can't believe this month is OVER (December's Goals). I moved out of my apartment in the middle of the month and it TOTALLY screwed my reading plans! Though I gotta say, it's WAY more peaceful living on my own, just me and the dogs, as it used to be before. I also have new options for reading spots which I really like! One is outside on a comfy sofa, though right now I'm sticking to bed under the covers with AC on (heat).

Total Read - 16 ebooks (+ 1 DNF) / 2533 pages (~84 pages a day)

Quite similar to what I accomplished last month.
I'll be posting another recap - a yearly one. I can't even remember if I did something like that last year.. I kept it simple, just my favorite books/series/authors - ones I gave 4+ star rating.

★  ★  ★  ★  ★ - Cheers and Shouts for the Favorites -  ★  ★  ★  ★  ★
"The Deepest Blue" by Christina Lee is the second installment in the "Roadmap to Your Heart" Contemporary M/M Romance series. While I liked the previous one, the MC club vibe annoyed me a little. This one though, has nothing to do with the previous one (including the MC club) It was sweet and heart warming. I loved both MC and how they came together - wanting one another but keeping their distance, mostly because they don't realize they are both gay (Callum is deep in the closet..). Loved the atmosphere of the reserve Callum's family lives in and generally the family interaction between the siblings as well as with the grandmother (LOVED HER!) and their quiet father.

"Wish Come True" is a New Adult / Contemporary MM Romance Anthology by Joanna Chambers, Amy Jo Cousins, Megan Erickson, Kaje Harper, Keira Andrews, Suki Fleet & Anyta Sunday. Anthologies can be tricky, but since I knew about half of the authors I was more than willing to give it a go. It was SUPERB. 6 out of 7 were solid 5 star review. HIGHLY recommended especially since the profits go to a great cause.

"On the Clock" is the 8th installment in the "Market Garden" Erotica MM Romance by Aleksandr Voinov & L.A. Witt. While I wasn't sure "Rolex" is such an interesting guy (when I've read of him in Tristan and Jared's story) I really came to appreciate both him and Jason. I liked how it played and how the romance was building especially how it effected both of them even when they failed to truly see it while it was happening.

"Can't Hold Back" by Serena Bell is the second installment in the "Returning Home" series. The first one being "Hold on Tight". When I read that one I didn't know it's going to be a series and BOY how excited I am to get MORE. Who doesn't like a wounded veteran as the MC, right? What I liked about both Nate (the hero in this one) and Jake (the hero in the previous one) is the fact they might be wounded, they might be somehow "flawed" and yet they are fighters, they don't sit and feel sorry for themselves and they are looking for a strong woman not just to lean on, because they truly appreciate a woman who knows what she wants and can handle herself but also has a HUGE heart to care for others.

A while back I've read one short novella by Cari Z., it was a part of the GoodReads M/M Romance Group and LOVED it, then I found out she wrote MORE of those and so I had to try them ALL. This month I've read 4 - three of them were definitely favorites. They were very different, only this in common being it's MM Romance. "Making It Work" is a regular Contemporary Romance of love in the office. It was sweet beyond words. "In All Your Ways" is a Paranormal Romance about Angels and Demons, I loved the whole idea behind it. "Frieze Frame" was also Paranormal Romance but this time dealing with Ancient Greek and magic, yet the story moves quickly through time right to this time and ago.

"Talker" series by Amy Lane was a surprise. I mean, I already KNOW I love Amy's books and yet I didn't know what I was getting into when I opened my kindle on the first page of Talker. It's sweet in a heart melting kind of way, and yet it's SO heart breaking, dealing with so much ache - both physical and mental - so it's hard to say I "enjoyed" reading it. I was broken to pieces so many times. Yet it was so so good. In a way each novella finishes with a very optimistic Happy For Now vibe, but to get the whole story you need to read them all. These MUST be read in order. Wow recommended! But prepare to be crushed before you are put back together in the final installment which was all about the love :)

After enjoying "Wish Come True" I decided to add these free short novellas by Suki Fleet. These two couldn't be more different, in setting, in the characters themselves. "Lima Oscar Victor Echo and the Truth About Everything" is the sweetest MM New Adult romance of two best friends finally confessing their true feelings to one another while "Metronomy" is a MM Historical Romance with a Paranormal streak to it with a bit of witchcraft. It was more ruff around the edges and was action packed from the first paragraph almost till the very end. I loved them both, especially because they were so different yet both gave a full engaging story in not that many pages.

▲  ▲ On the Fence ▼  ▼
"Sugarland Blue", is a Romantic Suspense series by Jo Davis. I've read the first prequel as well as the first 3 book in the series and I gotta say it's not what I wanted it to be.. This series is a sort of Spin-Off to "Firefighters of Station Five" which I really liked! It had romance but also a mystery and action. I felt as though this series was dealing with different stuff, focusing more on family life and less on the relationship buildup also the mystery was someone less prominent, or maybe it felt like it because the main focus was on family/kids. The books I DID read were okay (besides the 1st installment I DNFed) but they weren't holding me captivated enough to continue to the next ones (which I already decided I'm not going to read).

♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥

So that's it for this month's Recap. I can't believe how much happened this year and this month specifically. I hope the next months in 2016 are going to be calmer (and enable me to read more or to be relaxed enough for reading).

Ten Simple Tips for Surviving the Apocalypse by Cari Z. ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ¾ ~~~

I"m not a fan of the Apocalypse.. There's something so very UNattractive about it. Yet I wanted to read this one because it was by Cari and I do occasionally read books outside of my "comfort zone" when it's by an author I enjoy reading. It's very hard for me to rate this one. It was nice I guess, it was funny at times, ridiculous at others and mostly strange with the "Purple Plague" either killing people or making them, well, PURPLE! (also adding other strange details to appearance as well as some pretty beneficial if not sexy abilities).

Metronomy by Suki Fleet ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

We start this short novella with our main hero standing on the gallows, ready to be hanged, hoping Hunter will save him. From there, the action starts up until almost the ending, making this short novella impossible to put down. Yeah it's extremely short as it is, yet it was so compelling!

Lima Oscar Victor Echo and The Truth About Everything by Suki Fleet ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

I decided to add this one by Suki and another shorter one (I"m going to start reading as soon as I"m finished with this review) after reading her short story in "Wish Come True" Anthology earlier this month. Originally I had more full novels but with moving out, moving in, unpacking and all of that I decided to change up a bit and add short reads I won't feel overly committed to. I'm SO happy I added this one now because Suki's published work is too damn long that I'm not sure when I"ll get around to it, but now that I've read another one by her, I'll do my best to add more ASAP (though that too might take time..).
So what am I saying here? pretty obvious - I LOVED IT!

I"m stupid that way that without spelling it out for me, I didn't get that Lima Oscar Victor Echo means LOVE. I was waiting for Echo, Lima and Victor to put an entrance hehe (well, at least at the beginning! :D)

Talker's Graduation (Talker #3) by Amy Lane ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

~sigh~ what a BEAUTIFUL ending to this heart clenching love story. While the other two novellas in the series held an intense conflict this one was all about the HEA. As with the previous one, we only get Talker's POV and we go back from the past - a while after Brian finished the physiotherapy, and the present in which they are living together in a cottage near the sea.

Talker's Redemption (Talker #2) by Amy Lane ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

OMG this book was heart CRUSHING. I had a constant stomach ache. Yet I loved it. It was beautiful, sensitive and this time from Talker's POV which was even more difficult considering what it dealt with. Let me just say this before I continue - DON'T read this review if you haven't read the first one because my next sentence is going to spoiler..

Talker (Talker #1) by Amy Lane ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ½ ~~~

I'm not sure what I expected this one to be, mostly I guess I expected to get Talker - Tate Walker's POV but the story is told from his best friend's view - Brian Cooper. Brian has been in love with Talker for most of the time they have been friends but he hasn't even realized that. Talker on the other hand loves Brian dearly but he isn't ready to believe that though Brian says he loves him it means more than just being his straight (!) best friend.

Can't Hold Back (Returning Home #2) [Alia & Nate] by Serena Bell ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

YES! I couldn't be more happier with this one. Frankly I knew right from the first chapter I'm going to fall hard for this book. This is SO me, how could I fall for an actual real life GUY when I can fall for a BOOK with all it's content? ;) I mean, I LOVED Nate, but we also got Jake from the previous installment and in general I loved everything about this book, so yeah, I'm a goner hehe

In His Sights (Sugarland Blue #3) [Chris & Robyn] by Jo Davis ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

I"m not sure what to do with this series. While I loved the previous series - Firefighters of Station 5 - this one is different and not in way I appreciate. The story in this one was nice, the romance sweet, there's a bit of action but less than in the first two installments. But there was something missing or rather I felt as though even with their problems Chris and Robyn were too perfect. It's not that I need angst, it's more like it's strange when there isn't any.. also the villain was deranged in a way I find it hard to believe no one spotted...

Frieze Frame by Cari Z. ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

I'm having the craziest days! Can't believe it took me two days (!) to write a review for this short but fab novella. Honestly from reading the synopsis I was a bit confused.. but as I read it, it became clearer even though it's still kinda strange :)

Thanos is locked in stone by a witch. The place in which he stays becomes a sort of temple, one that is frequent by the witch and others. Through them he learns of the the time that passes by, always lonely and unable to communicate with others. Alive and yet frozen.

Hot Pursuit (Sugarland Blue #2) [Taylor & Cara] by Jo Davis ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

This one was WAY better than the first installment! I was hooked from the start. I like both MC, they were interesting and I was really curious to how things will play out and all the mysterious details of Cara and Taylor's past. I do wish we got more about Taylor's past, there was a bit mentioned there but not enough to my liking.

Taylor witnessed a horrible scene in which Cara's sister was murdered 4 years ago. But somehow Cara figured it all wrong as though Taylor is the one to blame to what happened that day. Wanting revenge she moves to Sugarland to look for him and make him pay! Yet as she keeps spying on him she is surprised nothing he does fits the profile of the man she thought was responsible for her losing her sister. When he hits on her in the club her band plays at she accepts reluctantly not knowing what to do with him or with the fact she finds him VERY attractive..

On the Clock (Market Garden #8) [Blake & Jason] by L.A. Witt & Aleksandr Voinov ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

My, my, this one was HOT! I really enjoyed the previous novels in the series but I was wondering how this one would play.. Blake, aka "Rolex", the guy who brought Tristan and Jared together, wasn't what I found appealing in their story, I only saw him there as a "side show". But I gotta say, I really enjoyed how he fell for Jason and the fact Jason was TRYING to play it cool but it became more clear as the story progressed that he sees more in Blake even though we only got Blake's POV.

In All Your Ways by Cari Z. ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

Sweet story of two angels, one fallen and another still shiny and pure finding a way to be together. Renat and Emiel loves each other yet as Angels it's somehow problematic so when the opportunity comes, Renat decides to Fall and asks Emiel to join him so they could love each other freely.

Sworn to Protect (Sugarland Blue #1) [Shane & Daisy] by Jo Davis ~~~ ★ (DNF 56%) ~~~

I knew I didn't really like Daisy from the prequel.. but I hoped that it's going to be somehow different when we got the whole story. Sadly I was wrong. Nothing about her made sense to me, not considering she is a grown women. Shane was okay, I really liked him but couldn't see what he found in Daisy which was a part of the problem.. I struggled with this one almost from the start. At the third mark I knew it's NOT going to be a favorite but on 56% I decided it's only getting to a place when I want them APART and not together so.. that's where I stopped.

Making It Work by Cari Z. ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

I've read another short novellas by Cari and enjoyed it SO much I knew I gotta add more by her. Lucky for me, with my endless list of books most of her published work is short novellas so I had no problem adding most of them for my (almost) immediate reading list

This novella is a free read from the M/M Romance Group in GoodReads, a participant wrote a description of what she had in mind with a photo and Cari delivered! This short novella is told solely from Eric's POV. He is a PA in a law firm, working for Beau, one of the senior partners. Eric has a crush on his boss for quite a while.. They have been working for two years together and as time goes by he only wants him more, but he won't be a cliche.. so he settles with being office friends.

Armed and Dangerous (Sugarland Blue #0.5) [Shane & Daisy] by Jo Davis ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

This was a nice prequel to the series. We've met most of the MC from the police station even if for a glimpse (or a mention) also the "Firefighters of Station 5" made an appearance near the end. This short novella does feel in a way like a full story because there's a full mystery arc, and yet, it's not.. this is only the beginning for Detective Shane Ford and Officer Daisy Callahan. They might have known each other from high school but they kept their distance for years. Now working together on a case they finally have time to spend time together - as a married couple no less.. The next book in the series - the first installment - we'll get a new mystery and their true HEA.

Wish Come True by Keira Andrews, Joanna Chambers, Amy Jo Cousins, Megan Erickson, Suki Fleet, Kaje Harper & Anyta Sunday ~~~ ★★★★★ ~~~

This is a holiday anthology I was really excited to read. First it contains a novella by Joanna Chambers - no doubt it means it's a MUST read, then I realized it also has novellas by Amy Jo Cousins and Megan Erickson! Yeah, I clicked on the buy button without thinking more about it. I recently read a short story by Kaje Harper I really enjoyed and planned on reading more by her so I was happy about that as well. I haven't read anything by the other authors and so it's a good opportunity to sample more "new" (=to me) authors.

Another reason to grab this anthology is its worthy cause! The proceedings will be donated to "Lost-N-Found" youth - a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to take LGBTQ youths off the streets into permanent housings.

The Deepest Blue (Roadmap to Your Heart #2) [Dean & Callum] by Christina Lee ~~~ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ~~~

What a pleasure this novel was ~sign~ I loved pretty much everyone! and especially the surrounding of the retreat owned by the Montgromerys. There is actually no real connection between this one and the previous installment. There was a little mention of Dean's relative who is part of the "Disciples of the Road" MC club but besides a mention and a phone conversation this story is totally and absolutely a stand alone novel.

Dean and Cassie are best friends, not only that, they are roommates. When Cassie needs to return home to a cousin's wedding she asks Dean to accompany her. Cassie explains to her openly gay best friends she doesn't want her family to get "in her business" about her relationship situation (especially since they have someone specific in mind that she is NOT interested in). Dean accepts though he isn't sure how a vegetarian city boy like himself would get along with Cassie's hunter family and not to mention the rural area in which they live in. Yep, it was funny (in a kind of scary way, for me at least..) that first thing he stumbles upon his arrival is the family dealing with a "stray snake".

December 2015 Goals

An ending to a year I can't even remember how it started. This year had so many bumps, twists and turns, bringing it to an end truly sounds like a good idea. Especially with what I went through personally on November (Goals / Recap) which prevented me from enjoying my monthly reads in peace. While I don't expect this month to be peaceful I hope it will mark the end of a troubled year to be followed by a hopeful and enjoyable one.

This is the second installment in the Contemporary Romance series and I'm really anxious to have my hands on it! While I had my issues with the previous one, most of them had to do with the MC club (not a fan of the sub-genre) which is totally absent from this one - HOORAY! I absolutely LOVED Christina's NA series "Between Breaths" and I have this feeling that though the characters here are more mature it would have the same vibe. Personally I usually enjoy "personal journey" than action packed / mystery novels so I hope I'll be getting exactly that with this novel.

Wish Come True (Anthology)   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
At the ending of the previous month I was happy to finish reading all of Joanna's published work but I'm so happy that it doesn't mean I have to wait long to read more books by her :) Here she is, with a few more writer presenting this M/M New Adult Holiday Anthology.
I've already read a few novels by both Megan and Amy so I'm excited to read more by them. Also I've read another short novella by Kaja and promised myself to try out more by her (but hadn't had a chance yet). The other three authors as a bonus ;) I hope they'll be new adds to my favorites :)

Hot Pursuit (Sugarland Blue #2)   ★ ★ ★ ★
On the Run (Sugarland Blue #4)
Bring the Heat (Sugarland Blue #5)
A while back I had an "itch" to read a series with Firefighters, I got exactly what I wanted with Jo's "Firefighters of Station 5" and so when I realized there's a spin off series with some of the cops we meet there I had to add it to my list. Actually I thought about adding it earlier but since the last installment will be published in the beginning of this month I decided to schedule it right here!

After I read these three I can say I've read (almost) all of Aleksandr's work. I did leave out a few with genres I'm less fond of, and I do have two more series he wrote in collaboration with other writers which are on my list, but all in all it's obvious Aleksandr is a favorite. He has very unique was of telling a story. It's not always what you'd expect but it's going to be quite a ride.
While these three are all MM romance novels, they're suppose to be very different, the first a part of the Market Garden series and while I'm not usually into Erotica and BDSM (MM or not..) this series captivated me. I really enjoyed all the novels so far so I"m curious to read this one. It tells the story of the guy we meet in the first novella of Tristan and Jared. He is sort of the guy who brought them together (now finding his own HEA).
The other two I know less about, I've heard Return on Investment isn't a regular romance novel and Dark Soul is more of a Romantic Suspense.

Can't Hold Back (Returning Home #2)   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
"Hold on Tight" is a Contemporary Romance novel I can't seem to stop recommending, there is something about it that is SO beautiful and I feel can appeal to different people for different reasons. It deals with so many subjects - being a single mom, hoping to find a significant other who would love your child, struggling to be financially independent, dealing with physical injury, finding someone who sees more than your physical imperfection, dreaming of reconnecting with a loved one from the past... It's SUCH a touching story and yeah, I'm a sucker for a good wounded veteran, but it turly has to offer so much more than that. Getting a second book in the series (while not even realizing it's going to BE a series) is all I could ask for, really.

Talker (Talker, #1)   ★ ★ ★ ★ ½
Talker's Redemption (Talker, #2)   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Talker's Graduation (Talker, #3)   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Amy is also the sort of M/M Romance writer who keeps surprising me with different stories that I wouldn't know what to expect and then BAM I'm hooked and in love and feel the total awesomeness of the ride. Yeah sometimes I don't really get it, and I feel as though I missed something along the way, but that won't stop me from obsessively going through her published work. There are MANY so it's going to be a project for 2016 (though I'll admit I probably won't finish all of it in a year..).

Making It Work   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
In All Your Ways   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Frieze Frame   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Ten Simple Tips for Surviving the Apocalypse   ★ ★ ★ ¾
I was introduced to Cari's writing through a blog I follow, I tried this one short novella and simply LOVED it. Since most of her work are short novellas I decided to add them to my ever growing reading list.

Metronomy   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This two are a last minute add. This month had quite a twist in it near the end so I had to let go of the lengthier books and grab short ones instead which was a perfect opportunity to try two short free novellas from the M/M Romance Group in GR (like the ones by Cari Z. this month). I've only read one short novella by Suki from the Anthology I read at the beginning of this month - "Wish Come True".

A month to enjoy novels by a LOT of favorite authors - so let's end this year with a big smile, shall we? :)

Check out more of my Recap and Goals of the past months!
